I'm curious as to why fingers associations with elements are different between acupuncture theory and five element theory. According to five element theory the thumb is Earth, but in acupuncture the thumb is the Lung meridian (metal). I thought meridians and five elements were part of the same system...

Any recommendations for use by a 275# couch potato at a standing desk? May get one for 80yr old mom for under her desk too. Bought her one of those under desk cycles and she doesn't use it.
I would get the wooden one for yourself as it will be sturdy and won't bend over time. For your Mom I would get the wider smaller plastic one, it's closer to the ground and safer that way. Also make sure she's doing it in front of a couch or with a walker or some hand support in front of her. Improving balance always comes with a risk of falling so make sure that it's safe. I don't see a lot of uses of doing it under the desk, I think it's best to stand on it to improve balance.

I do not study tai chi, so I cannot speak on it, though I've taken a few classes & the benefits are quite lovely. I am a chi gung instructor and offer both medical and spiritual chi gung practice. Chi gung requires knowledge of TCM, the meridian system and 5 element theory. The practice of medical chi gung is to purge, tonify and regulate the flow of chi through the meridian system, to achieve vitality and good health. The gentle movements hold these intentions... Intention, being the 3rd rule of chi gung. Posture and breath are the other two. When doing chi gung, feeling the pulse, breath and flow of chi is an excellent way to connect mind and body. I refer to chi gung as a moving meditation. It is a simple yet powerful practice.

I did a 12-minute hip mobility routine before doing this one. I’ve had major pain in my left sacrum. After the stretching, the area was loosened a bit. After doing this routine, the pain is 95% gone! Praise G-d!! Great movements in this routine for warming up the body, and releasing stress! (After this routine, I did some of the Serving Teacup moves and all pain is gone!).
